Beware of buying from Amazon in America.

I ordered two DVD's & have been charged by customs, via our sorting office a hefty extra £12.29 on top of the charge for both DVD's.
I have no idea if these DVD's were available here, but I suspect not.
I have many times bought American DVD'S etc & have never had a customs charge on them before.
I am now thinking it isn't a good idea to buy anything from America via Amazon.
Best wishes,

It's buying products from non EU countries that are likely to attract tax, it wasn't Amazon that charged you.
I know Amazon have questionable tax practices, unfortunately members of the public don't have that luxury.

Yes I know it wasn't Amazon who charged me, it was our rip off customs, only £8 was actually custom charges the remaining money was their handling, what handling, the post man comes here anyway, I had to go to the sorting office to pay for & collect the parcel. Oh! Wait though, someone had to stick the sticker on it saying there was a charge.:mad::mad:

Customs charges are well documented. You have been lucky before this purchase.

The handling charge is for all the paperwork. Do you have any idea what is involved in importing goods? No, clearly not.

the post office ( post man employers) did not charge you either.

the charge is from Customs and Excise, which charge the courier who then passes these charges onto to, so the handling charge will be like an admin charge.

the reason you have got these charges is that the container that you item was in one of the ones stopped and checked by Customs. Not all containers get stopped and checked. You just got unlucky this time

Thanks for your replies. I shall no longer order any items from Amazon if they are from American firms.

    Why not?
simply buy from sellers who offer tax inclusive postal services
The question Im asking is were you aware of import fees before this?

No I wasn't aware that I could be charged extra. I thought Amazon would do any necessary admin if you bought from them.
As I've said, I have never been charged extra before.
It's a shame, because America have some great items, namely DVD's & Audio books, that can't be bought in Britain.

I try to remind myself to look at the average - I buy things from the US that are cheaper than here and a few get taxed. Is the total still working out cheaper?

That was the first time I've ever had to pay customs, theoretica.

  • Sorry I don't have a great deal of sympathy because this is taxation that should be paid to the UK and reduce the overall burden for people struggling and not able to purchase hard to find DVDs from America. Sorry.
