I only read the opening post where he said he wanted it as a 'safety' to pay for things. I read this as 'in case i get low on money'.adouglasmhor wrote: »Why? what use would that be in the case the OP descibes?0 -

Pay for things like hotels etc. that in some cases in USA need a credit card. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Can you not get these pre-paid credit card things where you can load money on? I'm sure my sister loaded her money onto one before going to NZ.reclusive46 wrote: »For rentals no and in many cases hotels need a credit card as well.0 -

Wow how patronising.Unfortunately the words 'credit' and 'pre-paid' contradict each other, so no. A credit card means you have a credit facility. A pre-paid card means you are using your own money.
I'm aware of that fact, but there's a difference between what a business will strictly accept as a credit card and whether or not it's loaded with actual 'credit' or not, isn't there? Hence my question.

It often says debit on a debit card and some card readers would tell the operator straight away that the card was not acceptable. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

And wouldn't it be wonderful if the OP folowed your "advice" and ended up sleeping on the streets or in a dump of a motel because they didn't have a credit card. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Not sure it's patronising when it's true.
See this guide on pre-paid cards from moneyfacts: http://moneyfacts.co.uk/guides/credit-cards/the-advantages-and-disadvantages-of-prepaid-cards/
It saysThere are certain transactions you can't use your Prepaid Card for, mainly transactions where your card would normally need to be pre-authorised before the full cost of your purchase is known. For example when a hotel asks you for your card number as security when you check in, so if you forget to pay your room bill at the end of your stay, they can charge your card.
I'm not trying to patronise or be impolite, but your post wasn't 100% accurate.0
