Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice on cleaning my daughter's high chair. She has a cushioned plastic seat and back with hard plastic tray and a metal frame.

We started weaning two weeks ago and are doing baby led weaning, which is a lot of fun but also A LOT of mess! I spend about 10 minutes after each meal cleaning it with a cloth and spray and am still not able to get it fully clean. As well as bits of food being stuck in nooks and crannies, the straps are starting to look really grubby!

On the back of the cushioned part it says 'sponge clean only' but that's just not cutting it!

Does anyone have any tips or ideas for being able to clean the high chair more thoroughly?

Many thanks :)

Not an idea for cleaning the high chair but for when you get it clean, and possibly now. When my kids were little I used to cover their high chairs with a bath sheet. It was easy to collect all the bits of food, shake it off and then bung it in the wash. The high chair was also on a hard floor so again easy to clean up after meals.

    HTH.

Thanks that's a really good idea! I put a sheet under the high chair as we have carpet but never thought of putting a sheet over the high chair :D

Oh the joys of weaning.... I couldn't wait to get past the messy stage!! x3 kids!

anyway, can you take the straps off? If so, lay them on an old towel and spray with bleach cleaner and have a good scrub at them, should get the worst of the stains off.

Same with the cover, if it comes off the highchair then lay it down flat and push the seams up so you can get into all the nooks and crannies.

I the straps come off run them through the washing machine!

I've had lots of highchairs and they are disgusting.. I finally succumb to buying the Ikea Antilop (about £15) it is the best one EVER.. especially for smaller babies.. the tray is a nice height not under their armpits and the straps come off easily for washing. The tray and seat fit in the dishwasher if they get too grottified and sometimes I just put them through on a hot wash to kill bugs.. and the metal legs come off and get scrubbed.

the big stupid cushiony ones only LOOK nice.. they are just germ traps!

Thanks for your reply! The straps don't come off unfortunately but I followed your suggestion of taking the cover off and having a good scrub. It's come up really well so think I'll start doing this once a week :) thank you!

Hi Pigpen thanks for your reply :) The straps don't come off but have given them a good scrub and so far so good.

I know what you mean about the Ikea highchair. We were actually there in the cafe at the weekend and I thought the one LO sat in was great! No where for bit of food to get smooshed into! We were very kindly given the highchair we have from my mum when they were a special buy in Aldi a few months ago so would feel bad getting a new one. I think I'll have to give it a good scrub once a week to keep on top of it :)

Don't ever feel bad about replacing stuff you regularly use for your own child.. if you start that you will never stop!! It is about learning as a parent and discovering what works and is practical for you and deep cleaning a highchair every week is VERY time consuming and no fun and you no doubt have 1001 other things you could be doing.

You need to empower yourself with the skills to say thank you but this is not working I need to try something different!

And there are hidey places for food on the Ikea seats too but they do come totally to pieces for easy cleaning.. Ours has a line of filth just under the very lip of the tray when it is removed.. but my children are particularly grotty I am certain.

I have this one for my grandson and it is great. The legs can be taken off and it can be stored in small places. It is much easier to take out with us at it takes up no room in the car.
When he is older and coming camping with us this will be coming too.

  • Another vote for the Antilop- even lots of cafes and restaurants are using them now.
