If I do an assignment for reimbursement only then I would declare it but not put the meal down as an expense but the travel and other things I would. So for example I am reimbursed £30 my expenses come to £10 then my taxable profit would be £20. I'm not trying to make it look like a loss, if you understand what I'm trying to say? Not sure if that makes sense to everybody else
Im not sure that you are seeing the point.

Meal costs £30 you are then given £30 back to cover the cost of the meal You have not made any money as they are only paying for the food you have eaten.
Hence if you now take off £10 expenses you are in a minus as you have paid for the meal they only reimburse you as much as you spend and if you go over the budget as can happen depending on what you order you are at even more off a loss.

There is no money to be made on these assignments only a free meal for which you write a report and give feedback on the service and the food.

They cover the amount of the meal only usually, no pounds left over, unless its mf, then you will be in the minus on acceptance lol!

I think a call the HMRC is best option if there are conflicting opinions. I am minded more towards it being taxable income but I don't do those sorts of jobs TBH.

Which is what the wise old owl (me) said in the first place... :D

Regards MDC I studied it at Uni Big Graeme. If you are only doing the assignment to get a free meal and there is no payment then no need to declare.

Wrong. Should have studied it harder!

Does anyone know if human cloning is commercially available and if so is it tax deductible as a business expense ?

I could make an absolute killing if I could be in more than one place at a time over the next week with all the bonuses on offer from desperate MS companies.

Strangely enough I had similar advice from an accountant some years ago. He told me that as I wasn't getting paid for it then it wasn't technically work and therefore there was no need to tell the tax office you were doing it. I don't do no fee visits.

Think you may have missed the lecture on benefits in kind.

If a decorator paints a wall in a restaurant, and they give him a free meal in exchange, would that be legal to put through the books as no income, just an tax expense for materials and mileage?
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
