Problem with Microsoft Securities Essential

Hi I am having a problem with Microsoft Securities Essential. When I turn on my computer the Microsoft Securities Essential icon is red. When I open this icon I get a messgae that my real time protection is off and my virus and spyware definitions are out of date. It says I am not protected and need to restart. When I click on the restart box nothing happens.

I have uninstalled Microsoft Securities Essential and reinstalled it but the problem is still there.

Can anyone advise how I resolve thsi problem?

Thanks
Val :)

How long do you leave it before checking? Mine sometimes takes a long time before it turns green.

Have you tried forcing it to update the virus and spyware definitions?

this is all its telling you that your virus and spyware definitions are not upto date and need updating. best thing is to update these and and then set them to update automatically in the future.

I've been having exactly the same symptoms lately (XP SP3), though it only occurs occasionally, not every time I start the PC. I find I can get it running by manually stopping then restarting the MS AntiMalware service, but that's obviously a nuisance.

Although it says the definitions are out of date, that doesn't really seem to be true. One other feature seems to be that the 'Update', 'History' & 'Settings' tabs do not respond to mouse clicks.

Despite some fairly extensive Googling, I've not found a fix. Like you, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but to no avail. Scanning with various antivirus and anti-malware products has not identified any issues.

Yes mine is exactly the same. Somethings it is working fine and the protection is on and then the next time I turn my computer on I get the 'out of date message' and it does not let me update.
