Hi, I have a 'different' plant growing in my garden and don't know if it is a result of the seeds I planted or if it's something else (from the bird feeder for example)

The leaf measures 25cm across (10") and is quite downy.
The stem is downy too.

Could someone help me identify it please?

Looks like a member of the mallow family, possibly a hollyhock. :)

Looks like one of my cucumber plants, or a courgette one?

    Happy moneysaving all.

We do have hollyhocks in the garden but the leaves are more pointed, although they have the same number of lobes...

Ah I wonder if it 's mallow.
I had some really old packets of seeds that I spread all over the garden. I bunged everything in together and chucked it about, not expecting anything much to happen.

Mmm , that was one of my original thoughts but it doesn't seem to be trailing.

I'd go for hollyhock. Planted some in our garden a couple of years ago, but they were too big and ungainly for the space. Since then, seedlings have been popping up all over the place. They grow fast, and quickly develop a massive tap root. Perhaps someone should start a thread on unexpected weeds - plants that have got loose in your garden and thrived a bit too much.

I thought hollyhock - my mallow plants haven't got those downy stems - but then different varieties have different attributes :)

I love hollyhocks & get excited when I find a seedling in the garden & start wondering what color it's going be.

Good idea, madjackslam, about the 'weeds' thread.

I have these leaves and they're next to my hollyhocks. They've not produced any flowers so I've pulled them up thinking they're weeds as there was a slight difference between the two, so could they have been be struggling hollyhocks possibly?!

    Maybe......

I think I will leave them to see what happens......

I was worried in case it was something ominous but no one has suggested anything worrying.

    thanks

I've got some of these growing in the middle of my mallow plant which has divided leaves. I was wondering whether to pull it out. Will watch this thread with interest... ;)

Hollyhocks are biennial so will produce flowers in the second year. Mallows are perennial and produce in the first year. You have probably pulled up hollyhock seedlings for next years display.
