TV broken after 19 months

Hi
I bought a 42" flatscreen Panasonic TV in January 2012 for £499. The other night the screen flickered and went and hasn't come back on. There's no sound either. I bought it from Currys and have the receipt.

Am I right in thinking it's them I go back to?

Thanks

Give Currys a call and ask for an out of warranty repair, they charge around £100 but if it turns out to be a manufacturing defect they fix it free and refund the £100. If it turns out to be neglect, misuse or beyond the expected lifespan of the tv then you don't get the refund but can choose to pay for the parts and they'll repair it.

Alternatively you can pay for a report by an independent engineer and submit that to Currys and they refund the cost of the report as well as either repairing, replacing or refunding the TV. A refund can be partial to take into account the use and enjoyment you've had for 19 months

You can also give Panasonic a call first to see if they will repair FOC out of warranty.

You lose nothing except the time and cost of the call by asking.

Thanks, I've phoned Panasonic and they've given me the number of the nearest authorised repair shop. It will cost me £25 if I take the TV in for them to look at it. They'll email Panasonic who do something called Cost Assistance, and then phone me to tell me how much it will be and how much Panasonic may contribute towards it.

Why not just take it back to where you bought if from?

You've done the right thing. My brother's Panasonic failed at a similar age. He took it to an authorised Panasonic dealer for inspection and they diagnosed a failed circuit board. Panasonic agreed to supply the parts free of charge but would not pay for the labour. Following the repair, he wrote to Currys asking them to pay the labour as there was clearly an inherent fault in the tv. Couple of weeks later they agreed to pay up. They did say it was a pity he hadn't approached them first, but of course that would have involved paying their hefty upfront fee. I would rather pay a reasonable inspection charge to an authorised Panasonic agent and get their independent assessment of the problem.

I've had advice on here to do both. I'll phone Currys tomorrow and see what they say.
