Personal Laptop for Work

Hi all
My company supplies me with a laptop for work however I have to commute allot by train into London and on the tube. Unfortunately the lap top is very large and heavy plus the resolution of the screen is low which for the work I do makes it difficult to use as I need quite a high resolution.
After initially saying there was a business case to replace my laptop they have now said that I will just have to live with it as there is no budget available.
So in order to make my life easier (and annoy the IT department by using non-standard kit) I have decided to purchase a laptop of my own for work use. The requirements I have are small and light but with a high resolution screen. This is probably why work said no as to get these kind of things pushes the price up a fair bit over a standard laptop.
My question is if I purchase a laptop primarily for work use am I able to claim the tax back or have it added to my basic allowance? I am not self employed so would not be able to put it through the business.
Many thanks in advance
Simon

If you asked your boss to reduce your salary by the ammount, and then buy it through the company, that would be least painful paperwork wise.
Also it would reduce your bosses NIC contribution, and he'd be able to claim back the VAT so both of you would benefit.0
