Vista drive is full after backing up ipad on itunes?

I have a laptop that I bought in late 2008. It's only something like 160Gb. Tonight, I backed up my ipad - about 22gb worth. I then transferred pictures from computer to ipad and I now have a message onscreen about my vista drive being full.
I have know Idea what I have done - is it the data from my ipad? I can't even find the data that I backed up on the vista drive?
Been at this for 3 hours so my head is a bit frazzled.
Any tips/advice/help please?

Download WinDirStat and run it - this will tell you what's on your C drive, and where it all is - every last bit of it.

If it is genuinely full, you may need to clear space to download and install it. Get a USB stick or similar, and cut something to paste to the stick; some files that you know what they are and where they belong.
