I needed to find 100 nice pens on a tiny budget and failed. I have loads of bog standard biros and wondered if there's a way to decorate them. Paint, ribbon? I don't know but wondered if anyone had an ideas. Thanks :j:j

I haven't noticed them lately, but my daughters have bought some gorgeous pens from the 99p store before. They've had packs of 10 biros with lids, a bit like the kind they sell in WHSmith and Paperchase, packs of biros with feathers etc. Its definitely worth a look if you have a branch near you.

Failing that, and trying to keep your budget down, what about wrapping ribbon round in a spiral. Glueing either end? I don't know how long you've got but you can buy ribbon very very cheaply from ebay. Look, this is £2.69 for 25 metres in loads of colours and is in London so shouldn't take ages http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Premium-DOUBLE-FACED-SATIN-RIBBON-50m-x-3mm-25m-x-10mm-25m-x-15mm-25m-x-25mm-/360701399526?pt=UK_Crafts_Cardmaking_Scrapbooking_Ribbons_Fibres_EH&var=&hash=item53fb7a91e6

or this polka dot ribbon is lovely for under £4 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FULL-25-Metre-Reel-SPOTTY-GROSGRAIN-RIBBON-POLKA-DOT-10mm-Wide-25m-roll-dotty-/171061792774?pt=UK_Crafts_Cardmaking_Scrapbooking_Ribbons_Fibres_EH&var=&hash=item27d413d006

There was a thing shown on Blue Peter some decades ago (eeekkk) where they took the end off the biro (presume it's the clear version?) & tipped glitter inside. So you ended up with a glittery pen for the price of a biro & a pot of glitter...

Alternatively, cover the outside of the pen - this American link shows how...

  • Hi

You could use washi tape to make them a bit more interesting.

If you image search 'washi tape pens' you should get quite a lot of good examples :]
  • You could get biros, unscrew them to get the removable bit in the middle, then paint them with nail polish before putting them back in

I covered some in green florist tape and cut the little top bit off and stuck artificial flowers in them

How about different coloured permanent marker pens? You could do four or five bright colours on each pen to make the pen into a (sort of) rainbow. Permanent markers are available all over the place now and it wouldn't be too expensive when you consider the cost of (say) five coloured markers spread over the cost of 100 pens.
Remember: however thin you slice something, there are always two sides to everything.

At school in science class we used to unscrew the pen and hold the clear plastic bit over the flame of a bunsen burner until it was a little soft. Then we would twist the top and bottom in different directions to get a swirly pattern in the plastic. It set when it cooled and looked a bit like icicles!

It would probably be best done with a little candle in a well ventilated area, but it is quick and looks interesting :)

I was reading a crafts website (sorry can't remember which one) and they had used Fimo to decorate pens. It was a U.S. site though because they used pens from Walmart which didn't melt, they said Bic pens melted when you put them in the oven to harden the Fimo!

It had pens covered in Fimo to look like a Sonic Screwdriver from Doctor Who. You could use Fimo? Maybe a bit pricey though unless you can pick up some cheap and you might have to experiment with pens that don't melt but I thought it was a great idea.
