Help Please - scam re delivery of mobiles?

Sorry, don't know where to post this.
Received delivery of package containing phone and SIM. Signed for (I think RM delivery of UK Mail item) and assume there is a live tracking. Package addressed with an almost correct name. Items not ordered by the apparent recipient. No indication of who supplied the items.
Almost immediately our landline phone rings. Caller says items have been delivered in error and will send someone to collect.
Sounds like a scam to me - deliver valuable items (via reputable company, RM), obtain signature for receipt, say "error", collect items and then try demanding money for non-existent goods. Is that how it works?

telephone directory.
this is a know scam trick, the scammer will pick an address from phone book and await the delivery to that address and as soon as its been delivered they will call saying delivered in error they will call and collect.
DONT LET them, call the courier and explain and ask if they have the senders details.0 -

Thanks for the fast response. My gut feelings were correct.
Think I'll go to the police station.0 -

Think I'll go to the police station.
If they phone again, deny all knowledge of having received anything!
I'd also check they haven't used your own phone account to order it, just in case they found your details...
Is there any paperwork with the phone? You should contact the people who sent it and let them know that you have received it in error.
This happened to a friend of mine about a year ago, and he ended up getting to keep the phone!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
The items are now at the local police station. If a "courier" turns up I'll re-direct him.
I am doubtful about them phoning again - may have realised they had been rumbled.
Will be checking my accounts now in case something has been debited.0
