Moving the meter charge £680 plus VAT

Options
Hi

I wondered if anyone has any help to offer. We have been quoted £680 ex VAT for disconnecting and reconnecting the gas meter, and relocating it to the wall at the front of the house.

This basically takes it from one side of the wall to the other, but involves excavation as SGN have a policy of replacing 2m of pipework entering the building.

This is the standard cost of alteration work. Is there any discount when the property has nonstandard pipes?

The house may have been one of the original houses to receive Town Gas in Bromley, and the incoming pipe is 3 times larger than the usual diameter. I told them the age of the property when I was given the quote.

Any reasons I shouldn't get it done? I know that our neighbours have recently had their pavements ripped up by SGN replacing old pipes, wonder if they had to pay?

  • Thats about par for the course for meters moved outside, electric meters even dearer than that. The only time I have known National Grid to do the work for free is with gas pipe leaks outside the property or replacing rusty pipes to the meters

In a previous house I had the gas meter about 5ft up the wall on a wobbly pipe which as you turned the corner to enter living room you walked into!! It was many years ago and we were quoted £200 to relocate. We were advised to get it checked for a gas leak as it looked so dangerous so BG came out and found a gas leak in our front garden. They had to dig up pavement, garden and neigbhours garden and were working well into the night. Result was we and our neighbour had new meters installed outside our house at no cost. A few years laters all the houses in the street had their meters moved to outside of houses as part of an upgrade by BG.
