Need a letter, only black ink ?

I have an Epson Stylus C82 printer and I need to print off one letter. The black cartridge is full, the other three are very low, in fact one shows empty. I'd have thought I could print the letter off, but it won't allow be to. Is there a setting whereby this can be done?

It's one of those "it depends" answers. Some printers, my Canon for instance and probably your Epson, still use a some coloured ink when printing black simply to stop the coloured inkjets from clogging up. If you select print via the menus (not the icon/button) it gives you the chance to select the printer properties. If you forage around there you should find something you can select which says along the lines of "black only", "pure black" or such like, which if you're lucky will get it to only use the back cartridge. Whether this will actually stop it moaning about your colour cartridge is really down to the fussiness of your printer and its driver. Good luck.
