Cost of DIY wedding invitations?

Hi all,

I've just started looking into doing my own invites, and I'm getting a bit overwhelmed by it all! I was just wondering if someone could give me an idea of how much they spent/are going to spend on doing their own invites so that I can get an idea of how much it might all cost!

I'm looking for fairly straightforward invites, pocketfolds with maybe a bit of sparkle/ribbon. I've seen some ready made ones (you just do the printing yourself) on ebay for about £3.50 per invite - will I be able to do it cheaper than that myself? Really want to have a go but not if it's going to end up costing me the same as I'm worried I won't be able to make them look professional enough.

Any inspiration in terms of good websites to buy supplies from would be really great too.

Thank you!!

There's a page on facebook called supermums craft fair-she will do a "shout out" for you for people who do wedding stationary so you could get some quotes ad ideas from there? Probably get a better range and slightly cheaper as they won't be having to pay ebay fees x

Alas I'm not organised enough to keep track of what I spent on invites but I did pocketfolds and all you need to make those is a sheet of card which costs pennies. You'll need a guillotine - but hopefully you could borrow one of those (I did from work) and a scorer which is just a plastic board with grooves in so fairly cheap (or free if you know someone crafty). For the inserts I just bought a great big pack of cream heavy paper which cost a few pounds and we designed the invites ourself (onbvioulsy add on printer costs but I think we only used one cartridge of each for 70 invites plus lots of other stuff) If you're not able to design them yourself there's lots and lots of sellers on Etsy that do and prices vary.

    Good Luck!

All my invites, order of services and place cards, 150ish of each, cost £20 in total, admittedly no ribbon.

A lot of craft shops let you buy card and paper in a pick-and-mix sort of way where you get a box to fill for about a fiver, and we got all our card like.
We had gold hearts on ours, which we made using a hole punch (£5-10 depending on design) and gold card. Was hard work punching out almost 1000 hearts, but it was cheap.
Biggest expense was the cost of ink for the printer.

It was extremely time consuming, but it saved us a fortune, and everyone helped out. My now hubby punched the hearts, my dad did all the printing (their printer required every piece of card inserting seperately!) and my mum and I assembled.

If you want ribbon, Country Baskets is about the cheapest place, but you do need a trade card.

Thanks for all your replies, I am feeling inspired now :D

kathrynha, I'm amazed you managed to do all that for £20, I definitely think it's worth giving it a try as if I could do it for that little it would save me a fortune! I'm going to give myself a budget of double that and see how I manage! I can borrow some of the crafty stuff from work (we definitely have a guillotine I could pinch for an evening or two!) so that should help keep costs down a bit.

Again, thanks everyone for your ideas, I'll let you know how I get on!

I saw someone who had made her own stunning invitations using brown card, a huge rubber stamp in a vintage design and a length of lace across each card. They looked gorgeous, and she said they cost her about £35 to do 100 for all materials.

I bought an A4 ream of Gold Card and golden envelopes for a fiver ( half price in sale) and printed 'Golden Tickets, willie wonka style, with rsvp details and directions on back ( dress code, no need for presents, but can give dollars towards honeymoon bla bla bla) 3 tickets per sheet

I have enough card left for matching thank you cards , I will print off little photos, passport size, from wedding to put on ( I have the photopaper already. i don't like flownsy things with bows on , and everyone loved the posh tickets :)
I think you can make it as pricey or cheap as you want, some people just send out e-mail and facebook invites?!

do whatever suits your budget, do research than see what sales have to offer (second hand shops are great for lacy bits,) I bought ribbon spools in the sales different widths all for a pound each , then had a girlie evening making own flowers, bows and other finiky things to put on weddingcar, buttonholes, and colourcode bridal bouquet. you tube is great for that ( try Fork bows!! ) kids love helping too

    Enjoy

What cost me money is not so much doing the actual invites, it was what I bought to try it out before I decided what I wanted it to look like! If you can get a good idea from the start and only buy what you need, then you can definitely do it cheaply.

I bought all my materials from https://www.craftcreations.com/ and was really pleased with speed of delivery, quality, the vast choice of item you can buy individually at a very cheap price.

That website looks great, thanks! I'm not very creative so their site is great as it tells you exactly what bits you need to assemble the invites! If I can keep the cost to below £2 per invite I'll be happy so think that should be possible. Now just need to try to not get carried away buying endless diamantes and ribbons that I'll never use!

Thanks for all your help everyone!

Do you want to make your invites or are you making them to save money? Ebay have loads of invites cheaper than £2.00 each.
