Dropdown menus not working

I have a strange fault developed on my despktop PC - running Windows 7.

I cannot select anything from a dropdown menu. For instance take bank security questions where I have to enter, say, the 5th, 7th and 10th letter/number of my password by clicking the appropriate character from a drop down menu - it shows the characters which I can highlight but I cannot select any of them.

It is the same on all other websites with drop down menus, Mother's maiden name etc

For instance National savings Premium Bond checker allows you to check any winnings for 'this month', the 'last 6 months' or 'unclaimed prizes' - the 3 choices are selected via a 'drop down' menu.(you have to enter holder's number first) The default is 'this month' which works, but I cannot select the other two choices.

All websites work correctly using another computer.

Has anyone any ideas please?

    The problem returned!

As you suggested I have isolated the add-on down to Flash Player. I have downloaded the latest version and it makes no difference.

    Name: Shockwave Flash Object
    Publisher: Adobe Systems Incorporated
    Type: ActiveX Control
    Version: 11.8.800.94
    File date:
    Date last accessed: ‎06 ‎August ‎2013, ‏‎13:23
    Class ID: {D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000}
    Use count: 498
    Block count: 1250
    File: Flash32_11_8_800_94.ocx
    Folder: C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash

i.e. with the above enabled it prevents selection of drop down menus. Disable it and I can't watch news videos on BBC etc

Problem is only on Internet explorer, not Firefox.

    Any ideas please
