HSBC - I don't know whether to laugh or cry!

Just come off the phone to HSBC, having tried to book my car for service at a main dealer in the UK, and paying upfront by card.

I'm told the reason for the payment declining is that I'm trying to use the card 'before the last transaction was made' and that someone is trying to manipulate the payment processing systems (this is Stratstone, so one of the largest dealership networks in the UK), paired with the fact that one is a physical transaction, put through at 19.04 local time (16.04 UK time), and that the other was a CNP transaction, put through at 16.18 UK time.

Is it me, or do bank computers have no sense? Especially when the bank knows where I am, and which countries I'll be visiting!!

I've had problems with HSBC's anti fraud system being over zealous and blocking my card. Apparently I made too many transactions on Amazon one day, so they blocked the card, but didn't bother to ring me to tell me. Very embarrassing when I next tried to use the card.

  • They are all bloody useless.

Nationwide declined a transaction for me last week due to anti-fraud measures when I tried to order an item over the phone. No reason given, just an automatic decline.

So the bank knows that you and your card are 3 hours east of the UK and have blocked a charge being put through manually in the UK at nearly the same time? I'd say that the system was working very well indeed albeit not to your convenience and at some risk to your temper this time.

No of course computers don't have any sense.

I think thats precisely the point.

No this means he made a manually transaction at his own location at 19.04 local time (16.04 UK time), and that the other was a card-not-present (CNP) transaction (most likely online), put through at 16.18 UK time. so both could take place from the same location

The system (for some reason) was showing the first transaction was made AFTER the second one (the first was made using a Bank of Georgia terminal, but I don't know if it has the time zone on it).

  • Oh don't start me on fraud departments, lol,Had problems with MBNA and to pass the security check I had to tell them my Husbands MAIDEN name?! I politely replied that he didn't have one and the reply I got was "oh yes, sorry my mistake,I meant your Son's Maiden name" I knew then it was going to be a looooong process :rotfl:

When I was with HSBC and paid off my car finance which was a few grand it let the payment go through with no issue, yet smaller transactions it use to flag up all the time!

Nationwide "bounced" a transaction on my card (which I have had for years) a couple of weeks back. Account was empty, transaction was with a large UK High St store.
Rang them - wouldn't tell me why they had blocked the transaction; then said that I had failed "security" - reason not given.
10 days later they send me a letter saying my account is blocked.

Have destroyed the card - if they don't want my business.............................
