, it is strange that they want to be able to see into your garden and also leave it open to a pitbull.

And that their garden is overgrown, but they're worried about "natural light" in the garden !

I'll say they can pay for it

I think the suggestion of inserting trellis 'windows' is a good one since you keep your privacy, they get increased light and you appear to be one of life's good guys. (Ken 68, post no 9)

I would warn you though NOT to allow the neighbours to pay for any of the work or supplies. When you get people who are this unthinking and unreasonable (however polite) you give them a weapon to use against you should they, at some time in the future, want some other "little change to our jointly owned fence".

Don't cloud the issue of who the fence actually belongs to!

This is a very good point well made.

OP - If they wanted it that way they should have said so when you told them your plans. Why should you have to fork out more dosh to accommodate what seems to be littkle more than a whim?

I think the answer should be "we've considered it but it's too difficult/complex and the answer is sorry but no - next time when we have to replace it again."

    Cheers

Maybe quote them at £20 a panel for new panels, unless they are going to do all the labour of cutting the old ones down to size, repositioning arris rails, redoing the top caps, replacing any sections that split etc etc

I think there having a laugh, theres no way i would want them looking into my garden, tell them to jog on and cut there trees down if there that bothered.
I would value my privacy way too much to do what there asking.
Sounds to me like you have a very big heart, but dont be worried about turning them down
