Sunday 4 August A30 Devon traffic at standstill

Yesterday I was travelling eastbound on the A30 in Devon at around 1.30pm. The traffic was at first slow moving and 4 fire engines rushed past me near the Honiton turning, heading eastbound on the A30. They were followed by 3 ambulances and a number of unmarked cars, all with flashing lights.
Between the A35 turning and when the A30 and A303 meet, the traffic came to a complete stop eastbound with very few vehicles heading westbound. There was nothing on the traffic reports on the radio and I have found no information on any news/traffic websites. I waited for around 30 minutes then did a U turn, as did many others, and used the A35 to make a detour.
With so many emergency vehicles involved I imagined it must be a major incident, but have found no mention of it anywhere. Having turned round I passed about 3 miles of stationary traffic.
Anyone know what was going on?

Road traffic, persons trapped, A303 Awilscombe.Be happy...;)0

Hi, thanks, but Awliscombe is on the A373 west of Honiton, so that would not account for the A30 being at a standstill about 5 miles east of that location.
I'm still bewildered as to what was going on.0 -
Probably why they were driving up and down, indeed some distance awayBe happy...;)0

I don't understand why an accident on the A373 would cause the traffic to be at a standstill on the A30 5 miles away.
Awliscombe is no where near the A303. It seems the A30 was blocked somewhere near the Upottery turning.0
