@cyclonebri1 my thoughts too. What is the best way to fill the huge gap between front and back of hearth. The constructional hearth is quite deep.

I think you mean the drop into the back of the firebed in which case it's simply a strong cement/ballast mix, but using fine aggregate, ie, fine concrete. Hoover out and wet before filling.

As much as possible of the floorboarding should be removed, but still giving reasonable support.

I'm a total novice. What would be In the concrete mix? Sand, cement and fine gravel or would a mortar mix do? Thanks.

    Would this do http://m.homebase.co.uk/mt/www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=110&storeId=10151&partNumber=782078

I would use a fine concrete mix rather than the mortar you have linked to, I'm sure you will find it in 1 of the sheds.

I always mix my own and would used for this application a mix of 3sand/2pea gravel and 1 cement.

Irrelevant for what you are doing, just by a premix bag of fine concrete, even post set would do.
