Where in the country do you live? If you're in or near the midlands it's worth a trip to the jewellery quarter where there are lots of independent jewellers. You get quality pieces for a fair price, often less than the inflated high street prices...pay no attention to high street sales that say a piece 'was' £2k and is now £399 - if a piece is 'discounted' that much it was never worth £2k in the first place!
I know some women think it's lovely for their fiance to propose with a ring, but if your gf has particular taste it may be better to buy a really cheap 'stand in' ring (or even an empty box with a note that invites her on a shopping trip) for the proposal then take her shopping and let her be involved in choosing the proper ring. If you get something she doesn't like she probably won't have the heart to tell you and will be stuck wearing it her whole life.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -
You will get a lot of comments on here advising you to avoid high street stores if you want value for money. However, I would disagree, if you arent that fussed about the specs of the diamonds and just want something pretty and sparkly, I would stick with the high street at your budget. I was given a white gold three stone ring bought from beaverbrooks and it cost my husband about £800, four years ago. Beaverbrooks have some truly beautiful rings starting at around £400.00. Goldsmiths/Ernest Jones/H Samual also have some lovely affordable rings.
Goodluck!0 -
My ring cost around £90 from Argos. I absolutely adore it, even compared to more expensive ones. It's white gold and diamond.0

My hubby proposed with a ring made out of a leaf and then took me shopping the next day we chose a ring for £450 in h Samuel it is 1/4 of a carat solitaire which is really sparkly.0

I'm right alongside browneyedbazzie - start with a token ring (empty crackers if you have to!) so she can pick the ring with you.
M'husband took me ring shopping (mad dash around the jewellery quarter in the hour before shops closed) and I adore my ring, because it was the first clear mark of "Us".
Also, once a guide price has been clearly hinted, your intended may decide she prefers something a little more personal, more unique than a rock & indeed lead the way towards antique rings.
Either way, include her in the choice if you hope she'll wear it for the rest of her life & Good Luck!

Does it have to be a diamond? I know it's a traditional thing, but other stones may be cheaper and you get more for your money - a blue sapphire or a ruby/garnet stone looks beautiful and you could probably get a substantial carat weight with your budget - hope it goes well, good luck x0
