Ah, bless, your username and your mention of Ratners, really made me smile....

OP, do you know what kind of a ring your intended wants, size,

Would she appreciate just being given a ring of your choosing,
she has to be wearing and showing it off for hopefully for a long time....
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

If you get a second hand one you will get more for your money.

im not sure if i like the idea of a second hand one because its obviously been worn by someone who no longer wants it.

Go to a reputable independent jeweller near where you live.

I have to admit, I wouldn't like a 2nd hand ring even though I know there is a lot more gold content in the vintage ones.

Im not a fan of the internet for buying rings to be honest I like to see and feel something I want to buy.

What sort of jewellery does she like? If you're unsure on the type is there anyone you could ask that you know wouldn't let it slip, like a sibling or her parents?

Also, do you know what her ring size is, if not you need to find a ring that she wears on her ring finger and take it to a jeweler who can then tell you what size it is.

Have you thought about looking on QVC? If you see a ring you like on the website you can watch a video of them wearing etc from when it was on the show.

If its professionally cleaned, you won't be able to tell. My last wedding ring was from 1926, it had the date inside.

I have very good experiences with "BlueNile". See if they also deliver into the UK.

You'd be best having a look on the high street then. Around now they have some really good sales. My friend got one for his now Fiancee last year from Goldsmiths, should have been £1800, was alot less. Obv they have lower and higher.
Are you bothered about clarity and grade of the diamond? Might be better going into a jewellers, again, mass market one, not independent as they'll be looking at both clarity and grade and telling them your budget. Ask them to show you different grades of diamonds. It's only when you look v carefully you'll be able to see the imperfections, and you'll be able to see size difference yourself.
http://www.goldsmiths.co.uk/Brilliant-cut-0.20-carat-solitaire-diamond-ring-in-9-carat-white-gold/p/06014773/ this makes it look bigger as there are smaller diamonds around the stone. http://www.goldsmiths.co.uk/Canadian-Ice-brilliant-cut-0.15-carat-solitaire-diamond-ring-in-9-carat-yellow-gold/p/06014858/ here's a solitare in your price range. Here's the link to their diamonds page http://www.goldsmiths.co.uk/c/Diamonds/filter/Page_1/Price_GBP-251-+-GBP-500/Show_Page/Sort_relevance/ Dont forget to go in knowing you want white or yellow gold. Platinum is a bit pricier. Also, dont forget if/when you get married, you'll need the same gold for wedding band as if not it'll rub down the gold of the engagement ring or vice versa depending on what's the strnoger metal. I dont work for them by the way, first ones who came into my head!

    Good luck with it!
