USB hub bargain @ Amazon

I've been looking for a multi-port usb 3.0 hub for weeks and found this one. Hope this benefits others who may be interested.

It was £29.99 according to camelcamelcamel, now down to £24.99 with free delivery @ Amazon.

This sort of product is at least £29 everywhere. So it would be a great deal if you need one.

I've been thinking about getting a USB 3.0 hub but I'm wondering about the wisdom of a 7 port one as they will all be driven by a single port.

For me USB 3.0 is only better than USB 2.0 for disks and flash drives which I don't normally leave plugged in because they are used as backup and transfer devices in the main. I only have 2 USB 3 external drives and 1 USB flash ATM too. Over time that will change no doubt.

Could some kind person clarify for me whether running USB2 devices off a USB3 hub slows down USB3 devices that are also attached to it?

Is it better, instead, to run both a USB2 hub and a USB3 hub, off separate USB3 ports on the computer?

Or are those just connected to the same bus anyway?

And if one uses an ExpressCard to give a laptop twin USB3 ports, does the same apply?

Please forgive my ignorance on this :o – I use Firewire 800 for my external hard drives and the technology of that is different.

(Just for the record, I've never had any problems running 7 hard drives off a powered 8-port Firewire 800 hub.)

Gratis, from memory USB 3 devices will still work at USB 3 speeds, whilst USB 2 ones will work at their speed :)
I think it's a bit like networking, you can mix 10/100/1000mbs on the same network switch, and the switch deals with the differences in speeds.

However in the case of this hub, whilst it's a good price for a USB 3 hub there is one thing I'd point out.
It's power adaptor is only 2.5amp, which means it would only power 5 USB devices that needed the full current draw of the USB 1 and 2 spec (500ma per port), let alone the 900ma per port USB 3 devices can draw whilst being used.

    Many thanks, Nilrem.

    Much appreciated. :money:

From what you’ve pointed out, I guess that to do it professionally, with USB 3.0 fully supported and powered throughout, what one would need is something like this – with a 5 volt x 6 amp PSU.

The product description for it quotes “Support 900mA USB Bus Power for each port” and 7 x 900mA would be 6.3 amps. So it looks as though in practice it would cut the mustard on power.

It’s from the same manufacturer in Switzerland, and the same reseller in Frankfurt, from which I buy my 8-port Firewire 800 hubs and I’ve been really impressed with the build quality, performance and reliability of those. I've had them running for years with never a problem. Not exactly cheap but a professional product.

Thanks again for explaining it all.
