Motorway lights being turned off - impact on safety?

to be honest, if you don't feel 'safe' driving with only your headlights as illumination, I think its time for you to have a good hard think about your suitability to be out on the roads at night
I did not say I could not drive, just that I felt safer driving late at night in bad weather with motorway lights on because I could see better what was going on around me.
The big issue was the wet weather with all the spray thrown up by the lorries and in winter, all the road salt which smeared the windscreen, it is not like being on an empty country road, where you can put main beam on, on the motorways you can only drive with dipped headlights and in many places the cats eyes are worn away.
Incidentally I had an Audi A4 which had a very sloping back window but was still classed as a saloon and so had no rear windscreen wiper which also increased the visibility problem.0
