I try to give to homeless people whenever possible. I think it is quite easy to tell when they're genuine. If you give them money regularly, you quickly get to know their names and faces. I don't care what they spend their money on, although usually I know that they spend it on food or things like toothbrushes. I find it a bit patronising to insist on giving them sandwiches etc. instead of money but if you're buying food for yourself, there's no harm in asking if they want something too. Or if you know there's a deal on (e.g. Gregs sausage rolls!) ask them if they would like your spare one. I think as long as you're not doing it with some high and mighty attitude, it will be appreciated

The thing that breaks my heart the most is how often people get themselves back on track only to end up on the street again. It's a vicious cycle. I used to give to two homeless guys and last time I saw them, one was about to get a permenant place in a shared house and one had moved into a shared house and was selling the Big Issue. They'd both really cleaned themselves up and were really nice to talk to but in the past few months I've seen them back on the streets again
I ran into the Big Issue seller last week and he was covered in sores and begging for money outside the train station. 0 -

I was asked for £3.60 by a man outside a pub one day whilst walking home from work. I said to him that after tax etc I earnt £6 an hour so why should I give him, a stranger, that money and what did he need it for. A pint of lager he said! I refused and flounced off. Was stunned at the cheek of him!I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round0

There is a homeless man around here, I seem him daily, I have never seen him ask for money or anything, I try to give him something once or twice a week, usually just a sandwich or sausage roll and hot drink from the Tesco Express, he is always really grateful for it. I don't have a lot, but my heart breaks for him, regardless of how he got there, he is still a human being!
theres a man in the city near where i live and he wont take money at all but will take food and cold drink he hates tea and coffie just like me
he a very lovely man who had a breakdown gave away thousands and lives on the streets now a very sad but true story ,
hes very funny and clever and loves a chat and the daily paper , when i go to town i get him a few pasties and sausage rolls pack of breadrolls and pack of meat some crisps and drinks from £ shop and bakerys and give it to him ,
if i get asked for money by "tramps/homless ppl" for food i never give the money but always offer to go get the food for them right away the ones who real want the food and no alcholic drink will come with u to get it
i also donate food to a local homeless shelter when ever i can
who knows where we will end up tomorrow is what i think;)
one kind turn is all it takes :T:T0 -

Just that addicts are more likely to be homeless.
Yep fair call, t'was an over simplification.
I like the call by southcoaster, get them to get you a coffee for the troubles. You could probably get quite a cheap runner out of a homeless person, and help get them back into shape!

I feel awful now
I don't carry cash, ever. I buy the sandwich for the homeless guy I do with my card, he's never complained and I've seen him eating it, but now I'm questioning whether I'm doing the right thing? I can only afford to do it once or twice a week but I don't even know whether to bother now.
Keep doing it, Nicki is just being miserable.
Why should you have to give money to anyone, if they don't want the sandwich then thats upto them.0
