Horse Riding Insurance...

Morning!

I have developed an interest in horses and horse riding over the last 6 months and knowing that I am going to stick with it, am aware of a need to get myself insured for riding and any accidents that result from it.

I do not own my own horse, as such I'm looking for a rider only policy. I have done the usual Google searches and turned up a couple of companies, but was wondering if anyone here can offer any advice or recommendations? I basically want to make sure I'm completely covered and will consder all options.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated; thanks in advance,

iecuk

You're dead right you need insurance if you're going to ride!
You didn't say if it's a horse you use privately and you might be liable for damage to the horse and/or any damage the animal does or you go to a riding school where you just need personal insurance for any damage to you!

Most income replacement plans cover you as long as you just hack and maybe compete at a low level.......no hunting, eventing, polo etc but if you ride some one elses horse (part loan for example) they probably need to check with their insurer to see if that would be classed as 'commercial' or 'for profit' as some insurers can be funny about that. If the horse's insurance doesn't cover you you need rider only insurance (don't touch E&L, blood from a stone and all that, when it comes to a claim:eek: )with a minimum of 1 million in public liability,IMO plus vet fees cover and personal injury cover because as the rider/ handler you are the person liable, not the owner! Mind you if plan to claim on PI, prepare to at least lose a limb as horse insurance caters for the animal and any damage it does, they seem to think that the NHS will sort us out:rotfl: so I personally always have income replacement and horse insurance and hope that will be enough....but in saying that in 25 years I've had many accidents but never serious, a little common sense goes a long way around animals.....

    Hope that helps

Thanks for the detailed response; you've given me something to think about!

I don't ride at a licensed school, I help out a friend with her horses and ride a couple of them (on private land or hacking on some tracks). I am thinking of taking one of them on part loan so I will have to take a closer look at the different types of policy etc.

You're the second or third person to tell me to avoid E&L; the company I keep coming back to seems to be PetPlan.

    Thanks again for your help,

  • I've read quite a lot about the pros and cons of the various horse rider insurance providers. There more rider insurance information here but as already mentioned the customer care might be better at PetPlan. It's definitely worth getting cover (for adults or children) even if you don't own your own horse.

Try the National Farmers Union and contrary to popular belief, you don't have to be a farmer or live in the countryside!!!

They specialise in this kind of insurance!

Hi, I would recommend joining the British Horse Society as a gold member, you then get free public liability insurance up to £10 million and personal accident insurance. Thats what I do.

its £55.50 (for over 21) for a year which works out cheaper than most other insurance I have found.
November £10 a day challenge. Im starting early- 66p so far!

Yes I agree this is what I was about to say, if your main concern is public liability. You could also try Scottish Equestrian, who I am with, they have a good reputation and are very competetively priced.
  • Just to let you know, I got my rider insurance from an equestrian comparison site called Equine Compare it let me compare equine insurance side by side. I found it useful when I was shopping around for the best deal.
