which phone to replace a wildfire S?

As the subject says, I had a wildfire S before, I liked the size and don't want anything a lot bigger. It was sometimes a bit slow and crashed and had a lot of three bloatware which I couldn't delete.
I am happy with the 3 contract I have, but just need a sim-free phone to replace the wildfire. Can anyone recommend a new smartphone that is a little more up to date but not too big?
Thanks!

thanks for the recommendations, there doesn't seem to be a standout phone in the small/budget smartphone category. i think samsung might be the way to go as i have a samsung netbook which has been good. the nokia lumia 520 has good review but runs windows not android, not sure if thats a good or bad thing!0
