I'd sat and watched them empty the house of every thing of value without even realising what was going on:eek::eek:

Plus the fact that a lot of people will just look away and not want to get involved.
When I had to break into my house (let the dogs out last thing at night - about half past midnight, and not being used to having a yale lock, managed to lock myself out), I had to smash through the safety glass in the front door. It made one hell of a noise, and I had to hit it several times to actually break it. I have neighbours on both sides, but no-one even looked to see what was going on. I know they heard it, as next day one set of neighbours asked about the noise.
Likewise, I have also broken into my car in the past, in a busy supermarket carpark. No-one even looked twice at me.0 -
One day I stopped a white van coming down the lane and asked them their business. The told me they were here to work on xyz house in the village and I pointed them in the right direction.
It was a couple of minutes later that I thought xyz is not having any work done and I kicked myself for not getting the number. I now accost anyone on the lane that I don't know and note their number.
In Johannesburg we had a lot of problems with burglary until I fitted a motion sensor light, removed the bulb and ran it to a small alarm at my bedside. So even before they had done anything I was on their case with a volley of Afrikaans sweary words which gets instant respect, within a month or so we never had another problem apart from the neighbours cat.0
