Wrote cheque on closed bank account

Can anyone help me? My husband wrote a cheque from a bank account I assume is closed. We were with Alliance and Leicester but got moved over to Santander. Stupidly I did not destroy the old A&L cheque book. The cheque was paid for the kids uniforms to a company that came to the open evening at the school, I don't know who they are :( not named on any of the correspondence from the school and of course there is no-one picking up phone calls or emails at the school.

Any idea what will happen? Any chance it would just be presented against my Santander account?

Are the A&L account number and sortcode the same as the Santander account?

I assume your Santander account will have a different account number etc. So in that case the cheque will be returned as A & L are no longer a business/bank.

But why give a cheque to a company you dont know the name of.
  • Yes, the accounts have different numbers and sort codes.

Husband gave them the cheque, he can not remember the name of the company  They provide the uniform for the school school and where invited to attend the open day for fitting / ordering etc. We were able to take away what uniform they had stock of on the day, that it what he wrote the cheque for. We need to go back later this month because there some of the uniform they did not have enough stock of so I will be able to sort it all out then. I just feel really bad that we have the goods and it looks like they wont have been paid.

When the A&L accounts were moved the Santander the sort code was changed, and the last nine digits of the A&L account number became the Santander account number. There was a period of co-existence, it would be worth asking Santander whether the cheque would be accepted or not

Others have reported to still be using old A&L sort codes and cheques without a problem. Basically 72-50-0X became 09-01-3X with the remaining 8 account digits becoming the account number .

The account wouldn't have been closed, just moved on to the Santander system. The cheque will almost certainly still be accepted. I gave an A and L cheque to my niece as a wedding present last year and it went through fine.

If it's definitely a closed account, the cheque will be returned to the payee, with the answer 'account closed', or in other words, bounced.

It's not 100% clear but I took it that the account wasn't closed as such, it was just that the account had been with A and L and was moved to Santander when they took A and L over. If that was the case and it was the same account then the cheque should be honoured.

If I've misunderstood and the account was in fact closed, then it would be returned unpaid as you say.

I agree if it was just automatically transferred it will have the same number as the last eight digits. The first digit became the last digit of the sort code. The sort code may have changed but they sometimes just map the old sort code to the new ones to make them the same as the Santander series. If so it should be paid.

If the account was actually closed by the customer it will be returned. Whether Santander will charge you a fee for falsely issuing the cheque I do not know, but the uniform supplier might not be impressed with you if he has incurred bank charges as a result.
