PC World Vent

I did some research and found a PC and monitor I wanted from PC World. I went in store and asked one of the assistants if they had it in stock (their shelves were ridiculously bare so that was a no) but before he went to order it he asked if I wanted antivirus and Office sold as a bundle as it would be cheaper.
I told him I already had them and he wanted to know which antivirus I had. I said I used the free one that Avast provides. Can't use that, I'm told, as Avast isn't compatible with Windows 8 so it really would be cheaper to buy everything as a bundle. Hmmm. I said I would think about it and left the store. Got home, did some research and lo and behold Avast free Antivirus is compatible with Windows 8.
PC World have lost out on an £870 sale and I won't be shopping there again.

All they want is a sale, preferably with warranties (as this is where they make their money) which is why I never use them for anything.
If a product needs a warranty on the scale at which they are pushed on people why would I want it?"Don't blink. Blink and you're dead. They are fast. Faster than you can believe. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink. Good Luck" - The Doctor.0 -
They buy Norton, etc for pennies. So almost no matter how little they decide to sell it for they make a profit and the Anti-virus companies win because most people will just pay to renew in a years time.0

Windows 8 also comes with an Anti Virus in the form of Windows Defender.
Not that it's the best though, but I'd argue neither is Norton!0 -
I've posted here before about this when I went with my Mom to PC World to get a laptop, I got the 3rd degree about which Anti-Virus I would be using and he gave the impression that I wouldn't be able to leave with a laptop unless I bought Norton. I am not a computer noob, I use Avast and it's an excellent program for free.
We went across the road to Currys and bought a laptop from there, no problems.(I know they are the same company).

You'd be surprised how many times I hear:
"But they didn't say I needed an antivirus"
"No-one told me this one was no good"
"Why didn't he say I should back up my files?"
Even when they did.
Personally, I preferred it when we had a whole load of different AVs to sell. Now there's just two because it's "easier for customers". Sure.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -

Oh, I tried that before going in store. I attempted to pay for it 3 times with a credit card. Each time it said there was some kind of problem with Worldpay and it hadn't gone through so I tried it with a debit card instead. I then got a phone call from Lloyds TSB fraud protection asking me to confirm I'd made the purchase. So even though the website said it hadn't gone through and I had no confirmation number or anything, without the phone call I'd have been none the wiser.0 -
No need to throw the baby out with the bathwater. perhaps PC world has a single employee who pushes it a bit far. ive always had good experiences, not too pushy0

They need to improve their staff training then because he either told an outright lie in order to get a sale or was unaware any issues with Avast had been resolved 9 months ago. That's a long time selling people stuff they don't need.0 -
They make virtually nothing on the sales of hardware. If they don't sell the extras they may as well not bother.0
