    http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/q/hp?s=BG.L

    gives you the purchase price
    and Fridays price.

So looks like £0.63 4/8/90 obtained for £415

    and £11.93 =£7873.8 friday

British Gas doesn't exist as a company now. It split into BG and Centrica in about 1996. Centrica is still there but BG has further split into BG Group and Lattice, -which went on to become part of the National Grid and I lost track of them after that.

The old share certificates will have been split and replaced several times over the years. Try contacting the registrars of Centrica, BG Group and National Grid to see if they still have any shares registered in the bereaved person's name.
