'Safety' socket covers DANGEROUS

'Safety' socket covers DANGEROUS

There is a campaign in the electrical industry to warn people of the dangers of socket covers that are marketed by many companies as safety devices.

The problem arises as these 'covers' are not sockets and they are not plugs and therefore don't comply to the relevant standard (BS1363)
BS 1363 is a British Standard which specifies the most common type of single-phase AC power plugs and sockets that are used in the United Kingdom. Distinctive characteristics of the system are shutters on the line and neutral socket holes, and a fuse in the plug.
BS 1363 was introduced in 1947 as one of the new standards for electrical wiring in the United Kingdom used for post-war reconstruction

The website www.fatallyflawed.org.uk highlights the dangers of these items.

Which Magazine have an article about these.

I have contacted several large companies regarding these. One large chain told me 'if we sell them they must be safe- otherwise we would know'

that pic looks really dangerious as the live & neutral is now exposed, why on earth would you want to use one of those ?
However i don't really see a prob with the plastic ones that fit in all three holes
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

That is a plastic one, which fits all three slots turned upside down! The earth pin on them is much longer which allows you to insert it upside down and open the live/neutral shutters.
