How long does someone have to claim on car insurance before the claim is invalid?

Hi guys,

About 2 months ago I had a little bump in the car due to the person in front of me panicking seeing a motorbike the other side of the roundabout and slamming the brakes on. Needless to say even though she had pulled out, the liability is with me. The damage to the other persons car was minimal nevertheless she got the police involved and I ended up with a formal warning.

It's been 2 months and I haven't heard anything from my insurance company except an email stating that they had assessed the claim and it was my fault. I think this is because I was told by the police to notify them which involved admitting liability. I have had no correspondence that involved them recognising that the other party was making a claim.

Does the other persons claim have a limitation period whereby their claim would loose validity? I'd rather get my car fixed myself than pay the excess.

Any ideas guys? Anyone been in this position before?

Cheers!

They have 6 years to claim for property damage and 3 years to claim for injury.

You may find that they have already settled the claim.

    Try ringing them to ask.

  • Cheers guys!

I've had no notice off my insurance company to say any excess I have needs to be paid.

Also would I loose my NCD if I have notified my insurance company of the incident but no claims have arisen from it?

    Thanks for the advice!

You only pay an excess if claiming for repairs for your own car.

Loose means slack, lose is to misplace. Sorry just a pet hate.

This is correct. No excess on a third party claim

Bell (part of Admiral) did used to have a TP excess on their policies.

Certainly the norm is that there is no xs on them and I dont know anyone that currently does charge one but in theory there could be one.

and whilst you won't lose you ncb if no payment is made they might well suspend it whilst waiting for a claim to arrive which can cause trouble if you have to renew whilst it is suspended
