Monitor display shivering and shaking

I've checked for malware, uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox, uninstalled and reinstalled Shockwave plugin and I'm stumped. Lots of times a day as I'm typing, the screen kind of floats to the top of the physical monitor and then shakes so much I can't fix the cursor anywhere. If I get it quickly enough I can minimise and maximise the browser which sorts it for a little while. Failing that, I have to do Ctrl+Alt+Delete to close it, and start again. Anybody got any ideas how to stop this please?

What kind of monitor is it. If it's an old cathode ray tube (CRT) type it may be the tube on the way out.

Otherwise, I'd suspect a dodgy video card. Can you get at the video card and reseat it in its slot?

It's a couple of years old - Packard Bell Viseo 230WS. I'm afraid I wouldn't know a video card if it leapt out and bit me on the backside :) I'll try finding the most recent driver for the monitor and graphics card, and see if that will help.
