Which indecent ones have you ruled out?

    Bayside
    Casa del mar
    Sea shore
    Sheraton delfina
    Doubletree
    Oceana
    Palm
    Ramada marina del ray
    Travelodge

All too expensive or wrong location

We struggled to find somewhere not indecent :D for that budget in Santa Monica, and gave up in the end and found a different beach community near LA. I looked for nine months before admitting defeat...

I'm not surprised you're struggling. SM is renowned for being pricey.

Only ideas I can suggest are:
    Up your budget
    or
    Look in another area
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

Seen a Ramada at marina del ray for about £280 but was thinking its bait too far to walk upto pier area at night and don't think there's much at marina del ray

Isn't it a nearly 4 mile walk? That seems more than a bit too far to me, maybe I'm lazy. :)

We used Priceline for our one night in the area...we had booked Sea Shore where we had stayed before but in the end went with Priceline and cancelled Sea Shore...risky though as so many hotels in the area charge for parking - some at $25/night which would be on top of our bid price...but we did our research on hotels in the area - knew that some would have additional parking charges applied - and decided we would be happy with whatever we got within the * and area we chose.

Note that using Priceline should not be undertaken lightly and much research should be done as if your bid is accepted you're booked - there is no backing out after.

You don't say what dates that you are going but I found Days Inn on Santa Monica Blvd at £104/night for a weekend stay in late August, free parking, Continental breakfast and about 2.5 miles from pier area

I'd also suggest researching priceline - look up https://www.betterbidding.com We used priceline and hotwire for hotels in the LA area on our trip last year. We stayed 2 nights at Culver City on arrival. It was near the interstate that leads to Santa Monica (so only 15 mins drive from there), and had a shopping mall across the street. That was our idea of evening entertainment though. Our final night before flying home (we were in Vegas the rest of the trip but had flown to LA as it was so much cheaper and a good side trip) was in Long Beach. I really liked Long Beach and we got the Westin on priceline or hotwire really cheap. I mean about £60 per night and a stunning hotel. About $20 parking fee, but still a great deal. B/fast at starbucks around the corner. As you are planning to drive, you could consider another area. It's only $1 an hour to park near Santa Monica. I know someone who stayed at Marina del Rey and liked it, however it's not quite Santa Monica if that's what you want.

I can recommend The Georgian though i have e no idea on their current rates
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
