Really bad credit rating

My credit rating is beyond poor.

I have multiple defaults about 3 mobile phone contracts, 2 catalogues which i owe money to and have defaulted on payments since 2009.

I also have one CCJ which i was unaware of on a credit card for £800 all interest added as my limit was only actually £500 at the time.

Now i've got a job and in a better position then i was a few years back. I would like advice on how i go about improving my credit rating. Do i simply just pay off everything outstanding and build from there?

One mobile contract i refuse to pay on as it was for broadband it was a 30 day trial and i never asked for a contract with them but they have put down a a £300 default of payment on my name.

Just appreciate some help and guidance please to hopefully pay up for the mess created in my earlier years.

30 day trials usually continue into paid services if you don't cancel. This will have been in the terms and conditions.

Are you being actively chased for some or all of the debts? Some of them will become statute barred in 2015 if you haven't paid them since 2009; this means they're unenforceable in court.

Paying back the debts will improve your creditworthiness but only marginally. Realistically you won't be able to borrow at any decent rates until some of the negative information drops off in 2015.

You should maybe apply for a bad credit credit card with a company such as Capital One, Aqua or Vanquis, and make sure you pay the balance in full every month. This will start to report something positive to your file.

Make sure you're on the electoral roll at your current address and your three credit files show this.

I get a letter for 2-3 every few months the t-mobile broadband one i don't and haven't been chased for now for a long time. I'll pay the catalogue ones off first as that money is something i owe them from stuff i got. The mobiles i might just leave then if it isn't going to make a huge difference

Will the defaults go off 6 years from last payment or 6 years since the default came on file?

6 years from the default date. It the default was added more than 6 months after the last payment you may have basis for a complaint.
