tax credit mistake

i messed up my tax credit return. i missed the wifes second job off the form. this was an honest mistake. got the first new calculation which showed us getting wtc as well ctc. and a big jump in payments
the next day we got an amended version with the correct amounts and a few days later a letter saying they noticed the error and fixed it. they were a day off paying over 2000 in back paymnts.
i thought what the tax man checked his records was shocked.
but seriously if they can spot such errors why are there so many overpayments.
was pretty impressed by their speed.
i like that they were not accusing us of fraud like other gov departments
