Unannounced visit - Investigation Officer from Council

Rahmandanel wrote: »Hi
Nobody was in because I was at work and family was out shopping.
The letter was posted on Friday at 11am. Family didn't get back until around 4pm. Also I am the only one who can read or write and by the time I got back from work it was 7pm and Council was closed hence why it has been left so late.
I can't remember the exact dates but I think dad was abroad for about 5 months.
He doesn't have a sick note as dad didn't know he was breaking the rules. He can always request a sick note form the doctor.
Yes he has death certificate.
Why would your father have a nephews death certificate?0 -
So the parents receive Income based pension credits, DLA, Child Tax credits and Child benefit for their daughter. They are entitled to the maximum Council tax reduction that their LA allows with no non dep deductions for their working son. The son receives his earnings, working tax credit, child tax credit and child benefit for his family. My second question is why does no one claim Carers Allowance as the daughter or either wife could be eligible, even the son depending on how low his wages are.
The OP says he is earning a good wage earlier in the thread and doesnt need any working tax credits.
I must say i am gobsmacked that the 16 year old isnt/hasnt been in any education at all  . I thought it was the law that all minors must have some form of schooling (whether home schooling or attending school).

I read this as the nephew has a death certificate rather than the father has his nephews death certificate on him.

A common misconception... not having a current MOT does not automatically invalidate your car insurance.
it would if the car owner without an MOT tried to make an insurance claim or even if he killed someone and they tried to claim against his insurance.0 -
To many bigots in this thread and to much twisting of the OP's posts.
Whether OP's family are literate is none of anyone's business, i've heard of plenty of non-immigrant families who are illiterate and happy to stay on benefits but that's ok because there white right?
Perhaps some of you bigots are smokers and will be 'a huge drain on public funds.'
Perhaps some of you are similarly obese or lead unhealthy lifestyles and are a huge drain on public funds?
Very easy to point the finger isn't it?
I have to say i don't particularly like India [to much corruption and complacency there] but at least they have a culture of bettering themselves, for this family to go from illiteracy to degree level in one generation shows that.
There are plenty of non-immigrant families sitting on their wide !!!!!! for generations upon generations claiming benefits and they are in fact the biggest complainers because they are now having to compete for what they think 'is rightfully theirs.'
Most of the girls in my area get pregnant at 14/15 to get a council house and live of benefits. I've heard older woman on the bus telling young girls 'why do you want to do that just get pregnant and the Government will sort you out.'
An Indian woman wouldn't be seen dead doing this, nor an African, middle eastern woman, even a European wouldn't do this as most of them are Catholics. The shame alone would be enough to make them expire on the spot.
It's time this country had a reality check and sorted out the non-immigrant chavs and stopped letting the Government use divide and conquer rhetoric while cutting everything left right and centre.
Also a lot of speculation on the 16 year old, I don't recall the OP giving us this child's life story. Get over it.
Oh also the benefits system is so convoluted the Civil Servants themselves struggle with it and its there jobs! I think in my dealings the job centre and DWP staff have told me all sorts of nonsense and they where adamant was right.
So how a vulnerable, disabled or full time worker is suppose to deal with it i don't know.0 -

What a load of tosh. Far too many sweeping generalisations on things the poster obviously knows nothing about.0 -
There's been a lot of rhetoric and anti benefit comments for a board which is intended to be non judgemental!
OP - your Father was absent from a property for around 5 months and did not inform the relevant authorities. Error or ommission, the fact is that he is allowed to be temporarily absent for up to 13 weeks as long as he had an intention to return within that period. I would ask to see original plane ticket booking.
If he was not intending to come back within 13 weeks, he was not temporarily absent and therefore, not entitled to help with the Council Tax. The Council Tax Reduction / Benefit will be removed from the account and your Father will have a bill to pay.
Different councils have different officers conducing visits and they can be benefit visiting officers or investigation officers, compliance officers etc = the fact is that they want to see if your Dad is still living at the address.
I would also say that I have been in benefits for over a decade and I have never seen access to EU or Non EU travel information. It is not a police state! however, I would be able to speak to immigration if I needed information but that is more likely to be a Fraud Officer as they have the rights under the Fraud Act which I do not.
Best thing would be to contact the council and ask for clarification - then for someone to be at home with your Dad when they visit.I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.

Sorry I missed the post about the earnings and also about the 16 year old not being in school. However my post was not judging the OP it was stating his familys entitlement and the fact that his situation is not unusual and no big deal other than to the OP himself, believe me the LA investigators will be easier to deal with than some of the posters on here. The most potent weapon of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed. Nor was my post meant to be judgemental however i was shocked to read that the 16 year old was illiterate. However its possible that she has just come from India so maybe this is an explanation.

Well I'm completely flummoxed about this statement regarding not paying CT if you get DLA. I live with DH, who has received DLA HRC and HRM for yonks. But we only received the 25% deduction once he was diagnosed with Alzheimers and then he was disregarded, and the discount was awarded to me, as if I lived on my own.
The way I read the linky was that people who weren't family were disregarded. But all the other people in the house are the family of the disabled father - aren't they?
xx
My I add that it was thanks to the good folk on MSE that I found out about the CT situation if someone has Alzheimers, or are mentally impaired in other ways, and I was able to get this reduction backdated to when DH was first diagnosed. Hope this might be of help to others.0
