Australia .....probably places where you can fly a flag without raising an eyebrow - is that the case?
Pretty much. Nationalists try to take the Australian flag for their own ends but normally seem to settle on the Southern Cross part of it. Someone with a Southern Cross tatt or bumper sticker isn't necessarily a racist but it's a damn good indicator.
The flag is everywhere here. Schools and indeed pretty much all Government buildings fly 3 flags: the Aussie flag, the Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait Islands flag. You see the Aussie flag in adverts and marketing all the time. Kids get mini Aussie flag 'tattoos' on their cheek for Australia day.0 -
I grew up in Wales. About 3% of my school population spoke welsh as a first language. They acted so superior over it, particularly in conversing in welsh with welsh speaking teachers, that the rest of us would be happy to have been called british and forget our origins. Not sure what happened with the font there old fruit. Scotland is clearly as much a part of Britain as England.0 -
Doesn't one address letters to Scotland, England?I think....0

When my brother visited Japan he came across some pirate whisky labelled "Genuine Scotch Whisky - Made in England". Mind you, Zildjian cymbals are always labelled "Genuine Turkish Cymbals Made in USA".Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

Not many people know that.
I prefer Paiste myself, but extra points to you for the relatively obscure musical reference.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

It's bush but not too remote. An area like this would be well defended and you have a few roads you can leave along if needs be. A really bad fire round here would be like the current one at Springwood, not like the ones on Black Saturday.
Purchasing may or may not be connected to an impending bonus.
Do house insurance premiums reflect the risk of bush fires, or is that risk all taken by central government? No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

A bit of both: the Federal Government mormally, as this time, announces they will pay a chunk of the rebuilding costs so that won't be paid by insurers and not passed on. Also, it's bad politically to be seen as a company to be 'gouging' bush folk (aka charging prices relative to cost of providing a service). Luckily there are few people who live outside the big cities in Aus.0 -
The problem with TalkTalk is that their customer service is non-existent.
I prefer to buy with the least hassle in terms of the work that needs doing.
After organising it for MIL's new place I thought we should change from BT as it seemed so reasonable....then I cancelled it after 2 weeks as it was absolutely rubbish for us. Kept tripping out, nowhere near enough bandwith....we couldn't even watch iplayer.
The upside was I went back to BT and got a better deal but I still lost the advance line rental.
To phone them you have to use a premium rate number and they leave you hanging on for 20 mins before cutting you off.
Sorry to read about Firs burnt bits. Vaseline soothes scalds quite well....I used to regularly burn myself with the iron and Vaseline was the only thing that took the soreness away.
Nice house Gen....reminds me of Canadian houses. They all have large basements to store sports kit and a utility area.
NDG's idea of a cycling to a station nearby sounds a good one.
...and NDG's parents will soon be my river neighboursWell, kind of.....as we are down river and on a derelict ind estate not quite up to the standard of the Peninsula.
Just renewed our lease for 5 years (3 year tenant break) and had to suffer a rent increase of approx. 20%But @ £3.50 psq ft (from £3) can't complain really and we got the service charge capped (yay).
I haven't really analysed our area but will do on Doozes link a bit more later........ but we live in a very diverse one and whenever we go into more rural areas I am always surprised how everyone is white and 60+0 -

As I mentioned a month ago, language is a tiny issue in Scotland. There's no stigma or pressure about speaking gaelic whatsoever. There's semi-unoffically a second language (after Scottish English) called Scots which exists in two forms - Lallans from where I'm from, and Doric where Hamish is from. I can't speak it but can recognise and understand some of it. Visitors never hear it. Words like weird, kin and kirk leaked into English. After organising it for MIL's new place I thought we should change from BT as it seemed so reasonable....then I cancelled it after 2 weeks as it was absolutely rubbish for us. We looked into getting Talktalk when we began to think Virgin were expensive. However a relative pointed out that the TV comes out of the same bandwidth as the internet which can slow things down. As we have the internet on all the time on many machines and watch more TV online than on the actual telly, we renegotiated a better deal with Virgin instead.
They're blisteringly fast, but occasionally it blinks out with no explanation. Comes back soon enough.
I like the look of Aussie houses ( and American and Canadian ones) but mainly because I like the size. But I've ended up in a place where big houses are pretty much out of the question and we live like battery hens. When I see how friends live in the midlands and the north they seem to get more space. Scotland more so and Northern Ireland too. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0
