So, the idea of buying a big pot of something that's got a short shelf-life, to potentially use a spoon here and there just isn't going to work. When I read the Philly cheese packet (before buying it for the first time last week), I saw it had about 2-3 months, so I knew I'd stand a chance of using it up before it goes off; I plan to try it to make a mac-cheese at some point.
This week I've got to use: a loaf of bread, 3 muffins, 10 eggs, 3 onions, 1 chilli, small tub of tomatoes, some (un)frozen veg and the mash I made (as the spuds were going soft/off). I've always got a raft of things that have to be eaten and it can be difficult fancying those in the first place. I like things to have a shelf life of at least a month, just to be sure I stand a chance of using them up.
I have a "zero waste" policy with food: You buy it, you HAVE to eat it.
It comes in small pots. Live as in what you need living in you to stop you bloating after eating.0 -
If you don't like yoghurt Pastures you could probably substitute fat-free fromage frais. I use it loads in cooking and a pot lasts a long time as it has a proper lid on.
For example: add a bit of fine sugar/sweetener to it and you use it as a low-fat cream substitute. Mix in a bit of lemon juice and it is a sour cream substitute. Mix in some passata and basil (important lightly heat over, don't boil) you can make a non-fat version of a marscapone and tomato pasta; mix with an avocado, some lemon juice and tabasco for a lower in fat avocado dip, add mint and a bit of sweetener for a minty dip, similar to in an Indian restaurant.
You can generally buy it with a use before date several weeks into the future and it is very versatile. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing?
