More incompetence from Abbey

I now find that Abbey cannot do simple things like clear cheques and make BACS payments.

On Sunday I made a payment of £100 into my new Bank of Scotland account. It should have arrived by Wednesday, it still isn't there. Of course this might be a problem with the Bank of Scotland, and I'll have to phone them to confirm, but my recent experience leads me to suspect Abbey. I have double-checked the account number and sort code, which are correct.

More importantly, last Friday I paid a cheque for over £10,000 into my esaver account, it was supposed to clear by yesterday (in fact on my online statement it says "Cheque paid in using cash machine - Piccadilly Branch, funds available 07_Jun").

I don't think I have the time or the energy to phone today.

What else can I do? These are simple activities and surely some sort of regulatory authority should take interest?

Well I phoned. There is apparently a problem with ATMs that is leading to a delay of "a day or two" in cheques clearing if they have been paid in at an ATM. They weren't aware of a problem with outgoing payments "but it is possible". The good news is that I have had a reply to my letter complaining about the other week's online banking problems - it's only a holding letter, but it did include a copy of their complaints procedure so I now know how to get this complaint into the system properly when I make it.

Shame you can't post their complaints procedure, as it would be useful to many people who are messed up by the poor customer service we are getting right now with Abbey.

Interested to read these posts - I am at my wits end with Abbey. Since Santander took it over it really has gone down hill. I have been a customer for over 20 years and only recently have I had problems.

Problem 1. While working in the middle east they put a stop on my bank card so I couldn't access cash from ATMs. When I got home there was a message from the Fraud dept - turned out they thought Doha ( where I was working ) was in Germany and that someone was using my details in 2 countries at once! Priceless!

    2. At the moment I have been trying to close an esaver and obtain the closing interest for 5 weeks . Several phone calls since May and I am no nearer to a solution although each time I am assured the account will be closed and the interest put into my current account.
I have told them this morning that unless this is sorted today I will be changing banks as I have really come to the end of my tether with this. I am currently awaiting a call back !
Has anyone else had a problem trying to close an online saver account ?

If you want to close an Abbey account down no matter what type it is, the easiest way to do it is to write direct to their internal department who deal with the closures and they will send you a cheque for the closing balance.

    Abbey
    Closures department
    PO Box 297
    Bradford
    BD1 1BR

I received a letter confirming the closure of my e-saver around 2 weeks after writing to them.
