Cleaning allowance

Not too sure if I am posting this in the correct section, but here goes?
What is the annual allowance from the Tax Office for cleaning corporate workwear?
My wife and daughter work for a major supermarket and they are being told they can claim back £60 a year backdated to a maximum of 6 yrs. I thought this amount was actually £100 per year.
I look forward to any assistance?

Its actually tax relief so will work out about £12 per year, you need to look on HMRC website for the relevant form.

You can claim for what is 'wholly, exclusively and necessarily incurred'

Washing commercial clothing at home will incur very little cost. You could claim for the water used providing that you didn't wash anything else with the clothing, soap powder can be used for all your washing, unless you had to buy a packet of specialist soap.
  • The rules are £60 per year and it can only go back 4 years now. Form P87 is the one you need to complete - can be downloaded from HMRC
http://search2.hmrc.gov.uk/kb5/hmrc/forms/results.page?qt=p87 link takes you to it. And the refund would be £12/year due back.
The qualifier is that it has to be corporate work wear with a logo on it that cannot be worn anywhere else. Obviously a supermarket uniform is that.

The rules - CONCESSION IS/are £60 per year
  • Yes that is what HMRC adds onto your tax code which would mean a current year tax allowance of 9500 or code 950L. The £12 is what you get back in a refund for earlier years.

You need to pull out your tax code notifications or check your tax code for these years to confirm that you were given the allowance
