You may also pay more for the tourist price, as against the locals price. Have seen this numerous times, in my 7 years here.

I am off on a trip to Italy, Lake Garda, Venice, Verona for one week near the end of August. Anyone got any advice, tips or help for a very novice traveller and 16yo daughter? TIA :-)

If near the end of August, then you may get some good set meal prices for lunch, as many Italians are back to work then. In many restaurants, they take the fixed price menu off for August as most places here revert to normal menu pricing, as they make up for the low cost "workers meals", during the previous months.

If you use the trains, don't forget to validate your ticket by inserting it into the yellow machines on the platform. Failure to do this will result in a hefty fine.

I am off to Venice at end of Aug too .. been getting some moneysaving tips from my colleague.
    He says

Eat at Brek in Venice - not fine dining but plenty of choice + filling (google it as they have a website so you can find them)

Get a gondola ride for 50c by using one of the gondola crossings (traghetto).. these are not a trip down the gondola but a crossing where there is no bridge.. short ride but at least you can say you've been on a gondola on the grand canal

Eat/drink at the counter in bars/cafes where possible as it's cheaper

I can't vouch for any of these tips but will be following them when I go!

  • Well you can eat very cheaply in italy but expect to gain a bunch of weight.

Conversely, only spend a lot of time in Rome if you like getting fleeced.

The Amalfi coastline near Pompeii is delightful, and you can do both in a day.

Ultimately may I kindly recommend that you pack your swimmers as Italy has wonderful water :)
