JSA and college

A friend of mines' daughter has just left college (in June sometime) well I say left, but she is not sure if she is going back in Sept to do another course. My mate said she has now signed on (last week) and will be getting JSA. Is this correct? I thought she wouldn't be able to claim anything until it was definite that she wouldn't be going back. I thought that the weeks up to Sept were classed as "school holidays". I didn't want to argue with her until I got my facts right.

  • If my memory serves me correctly its if her parents still receive child benefit or child tax credit, if yes then they will have to repay this back if they don't inform them that she is claiming JSA herself.

If she is your friend, why argue with her anyway.

Hardly worth maybe getting into an argument and losing a friend in the process. She might just turn round and tell you to mind your own business.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • If the parents are no longer receiving CB/ CTC for her, she may claim JSA whilst she is between different courses (not the same one) and actively seeking work.

I didn't mean argue in the usual sense (maybe wrong choice of words there! :o) I mean I don't want her to get into trouble if her lass is claiming when she shouldn't, as she is now 18. So I thought it best to get some facts, as I thought you couldn't claim in the school holidays. Does that mean that all students can claim JSA in the holidays then?

No she wouldn't do that, as she is as pretty clueless as me in the benefits dept, but I just wanted to check in case she got into trouble. Thanks for the replies :)

Students can't claim benefits during the holidays in their course but they can claim them between courses, as long as the parents are no longer claiming child related benefits.
