Nokia 800 Lumia bluetooth

Why does a Nokia 800 Lumia not connect via bluetooth to another mobile?
I have tried a few including another Nokia, a Nokia 300.
It appears to detect & pair Ok but will not connect or send/receive any data
It pairs/connects with bluetooth in the car with no problems
any ideas?
