Receiving Money from Overseas - Why was I charged when Sender opted to pay for all?

Hey there,

I'm having a problem with a payment that was sent to me via International Transfer from RBC in Canada to HSBC in the UK and have spent a couple of frustrating hours on the phone to HSBC to no avail.

The sender opted to pay all charges so that I would receive the full amount, 500 GBP, which was converted to £ at the source.

However, it arrived in my account as £490.00. HSBC Say they didn't take a charge, and that it was sent through National Bank of Westminster (NatWest) as an intermediary, and the £10.00 charge came from them.

However, on the receipt provided by RBC, no intermediary is listed - it looks like it essentially states it will go straight through to HBSC, and RBC informed the sender I would receive £500.00

I've included a photo of the receipt below. Can anybody help me understand what happened - did the intermediary bank make a mistake in charging? Should the payment have gone straight through to HSBC without an intermediary?

Read the print at the bottom it does talk of possible charges being deducted by the receiving bank or its intermediaries

RBC process their sterling clearing through Nat West/RBS but if the payment is set up "correctly" by RBC, the payment instruction they (NWB) receive should not "allow" them to deduct charges before passing it on to HSBC via CHAPS.

It would be useful to see the confirmation that HSBC gave you to show the break-down of the payment amounts.
  • Probably a CHAPS fee from agent bank in UK.

That's the way the banking system works internationally. RBC will use NatWest as their UK agent.
