Transferring a personalised plate at DVLA offices?

Hi Guys,

I've bought my OH a new vehicle and want to transfer her personalised plate from her old vehicle to the new vehicle. I've filled in the V317 and have the V5 for the new vehicle and £80+(all docs for the old car). Am I right in assuming that the DVLA offices no longer process this for you, you have to now send over the form to Swansea and wait upto 3-6 weeks to get documents back? I remember going to DVLA Northampton 3 years ago and transferring the number plate from a certificate to her then new car immediately (he printed off a new tax disc, mot). I tried to do it in DVLA Peterborough, but they said they only act as a 'courier' to Swansea, it would probably end up quicker if I send it. The Peterborough branch looked really small compared to Northampton, I should have asked them if Northampton still do it but was in a rush to get back to work which is 20 miles away on my lunch break.

Does anyone know if the Northampton branch still offers this facility? The website doesn't indicate it does, and the tel number seems to divert me to various automated responses.

I had to send mine to Swansea just last week - I was told the same as you in Aberdeen - and you'll be lucky to get it all back in 3 to 4 weeks if what I hear is correct.

Apparently due to several 'cost-cutting' exercises the DVLA is swamped. I'm told all new car registrations are now done there - the dealers cant just do first registration and tax discs themselves as before.

So it's very busy around the new 6 monthly reg date change.

It's snookered me as I cant sell my old car until I get the number changed over.

In future I'll put my cherished number on retention and get a new number for the old car I'm selling before I buy the new one.

From a certificate = instant
From another car = forever!

Two very different scenarios...

With the local offices closing down, yes, you are talking quite a long wait through Swansea.
