Just got a new council flat - with no carpets but has real wood floorboards.
I was wondering how much money and effort is required for sanding and varnishing the floors DIY style.
Any DIY experts out there?

I'd like to know this too as I'm moving into a Victorian house with real floorboards too and would like to sand and varnish them.0

The best thing to do is to hire an Industrial sander from any of the hire shops.
The best varnish for floors would be an oilbase varnish, you can have matt, satin, or gloss.
Oilbase is more hardwearing than the water base, but after you have varnished the floor, dont put your furniture back in for a couple of days, as the varnish has to cure.( harden up)
Much like nail polish lol, you paint your nails, the polish is dry to the touch, but you can still smudge the polish even though its dry,so your varnish works along the same lines.
You can buy a short haired roller from any DIY store, you cut in round the edges with a brush, then you can roll the varnish, make sure its in the one direction, and always working towards your door.0 -
Check your lease first, a lot of flats have a clause in the lease saying you cannot have exposed floorboards because the noise travels so much to other flats. We had a council leasehold flat with a corridor less than 2 m sq that was sanded, and the council made us carpet it :-(When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0
