Never heard of that one. Tax allowances have always been tax free with clearly defined tax bands above the tax free allowances. Perhaps you saw the NI going out as well which is based on a different set of bands?
I'm just remembering how the woman in my old local tax office explained it to me at the time.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -

If you earned £6301 and your personal allowance was 6300 then you would only be charged tax on £1 so you could still make a claim
more and more peopkle are finding themselves in this situation now.
many employers are giving 0 hour contracts and people are only working when wanted.
my friends daughter received a tax refund in may. she was employed by the council as a qualified outdoor sports coach on a xer hour contract.
so even though she earns almost £500 a week, they only gace her 10 full weeks work ( summer, xmas and easter holidays)
she paid almost £700 in tax yet earned way below her personal allowance0
