Attendance Allowance

My father who is 91 was living at his own home and self sufficient until 2 months ago when he had a fall and spent 3 weeks in hospital. After he came home he had another fall and went back into hospital. He has since had further falls and is now unable to care for himself and as of last week is in a self funded care home. Hospital Doctors advise that he is no longer able to look after himself.
He has previously not received any benefits, but we are now looking to get attendance allowance, but my reading of the claim form is that he needs to have had Care for 6 months.
My question is, as he is now in a Care Home needing 24 hour care can we apply for the Attendance Allowance with immediate effect. Thanks

Although this is true I suspect that he would have been eligible for
Attendance Allowance some time ago but just didn't claim.

Age UK has some very useful information on their website.

You can also google Attendance Allowance and look at eligibility.

My personal opinion is to go ahead with the claim.

I agree with pmlindyloo, at his age he probably had care needs for a long time, even if he had no help.
Definitely apply and the AgeUK info is very useful.

i'll tall my great aunt that.
she is 96 and lives alone and does all her own housework/cleaning. my uncle forced her to let him take her shopping a couple of years ago, as it is a 20 minute walk each way)
i wouldnt want to race her but id hold her coat and watch the fallout if you made that comment to her face ;)
