Up to 5 mins to have internet ready on Talktalk fibre?

Hi folks,

I just got Talktalk fibre and getting good download speeds over 36 MBPS and seemingly no dropouts, but one little thing is needling me. If I switch off the openreach modem and D-Link 3780 router (as I used to do with my old DSL at night) it can take up to 5 mins to get on the internet when both are switched on again, all lights turn green on both after a few mins but for some reason the net isn't ready to browse for 2 or 3 mins later, the engineer said it should be ready in as little as 30 secs.

Its not a big problem as I intend to leave it on all the time but just wondering is the above normal? Connected by Ethernet to desktop and a good quality adsl extension cable to master socket, but my nexus 7 has the same thing cant browse for almost 5 mins when both moden and router are switched on. All the icons are green on the routers web setup page 192.168.1.1 but takes a few mins longer to get the net working.

Any ideas as to why this might be.

Thanks
Joe

you may not know, but talktalk have an excellent forum. When you post there, be patient and wait for an OCE to reply as they have the knowledge and facility to introduce some changes. Others might reply and know what they're talking about, but it's the OCE who action anything.

Having said that, today the forum is changing, and has been on "read only" mode for 24 hrs, so maybe there will be slight delays.

There is also a Talktalk rep somewhere on MSE and a TT thread somewhere.

If your happy with the speed then just don't switch it off at night? I have virgin and it takes a couple if mins after a reset etc to get back on line.
  • The modem is designed to be left on 24/7. I've never yet switched off my ADSL modem, its been on 24/7 for the last 3 years.

Switching it off could force the line to renegotiate the line speed or profile if the exchange thinks there is noise or a fault on the line.
